Hearts into the quarter finals!

Saturday 17th February 2018.

Fife Cup 3rd Round.

Cupar Hearts made hard work of their 3rd round Fife Cup tie when they welcomed Championship side St Monans Swallows to Duffus Park. But an 81st minute screamer from Kerr Brown ensured Hearts made it through to the quarter finals where they will face Falkland in March.

Cupar kept the visitors pinned back in their own half in the opening stages but failed to find any attempts on target to test ‘keeper Adrianus Sergerius.

A foul on Jakub Dobes gave Hearts a free kick in a dangerous position but Grant Blyth’s effort went up over the wall and straight to the ‘keeper.

St Monans shocked the home support when they should have opened the scoring on the half hour. A diving header was saved but then spilled by Gavin Wilson only for the Swallows striker to pounce and somehow his shot from close range was deflected out for a corner and cleared.

Then it was Hearts who missed a glorious chance when a great run by Jakub Dobes saw him beat two defenders to cross for Kyle Watson in front of goal only for him to fire wide.

Cupar made a double substitution at half time bringing on the fresh legs of Lee Sibanda and Scott McKay for Gary Sutherland and Grant Blyth respectfully.

Hearts were enjoying plenty of possession but failing to create clear cut chances.

Better play saw good passing movement with Gary Brown setting up Lee Sibanda who had time to take his shot but it was matched by Adrianus Sergerius in the visiting goal who turned it round for a corner and then Sean Murdoch headed over.

The winning goal came after a great delivery by Aaron Leadbetter was headed back out to Kerr Brown who beat his man and fired his spectacular shot into the back of the net from distance.

Cupar Hearts: Wilson, Sutherland, Murdoch, Anderson, Blyth, Gray, McKinnon, K. Brown, Dobes, Leadbetter and Watson (c). Subs: Sibanda, McInroy, McKay, Laurie and G. Brown.
