Burntisland win 5-4 on penalties.

Saturday 20th January 2018.

Taylor Sullivan Funeral Directors Cup 4th Round.

Cupar Hearts were in Taylor Sullivan League Cup action when they welcomed Kingdom of Fife Championship leaders Burntisland United to a wind-swept Duffus Park.

Hearts opened the scoring on 15 minutes when a Lee Sibanda cross was fired goalwards by Sean Murdoch and goalkeeper Craig Downie parried it straight into the path of striker Kyle Watson whose low drive found the net.

Then another Sibanda cross found Ryan Gray but his looping header went just over.

A Burntisland free kick gave the visitors a chance after a foul by Aaron Leadbetter on Ben Couper. Home ‘keeper Gavin Wilson made his presence felt when he punched clear the ball and it fell back to Couper who sent it straight back in but there were no takers in the box.

Just before the break the best move of the match by Cupar started by Lee Sibanda saw Ryan Gray pick out the on running Steven Pennington with a superb cross field pass and his drive and shot was well saved by Craig Downie who turned it round the post for a corner but Hearts couldn’t capitalise.

The strong wind was making playing conditions very difficult and the ball kept drifting out of play.

The equaliser came with 10 minutes remaining when poor defending by Hearts saw James Woodhouse score from distance.

It meant that penalty kicks would be needed to decide a winner. Burntisland missed their first two penalties only for Hearts to miss their 3rd and 5th so on to sudden death where Burntisland ran out eventual winners.

Cupar Hearts: Wilson, K. Brown, Murdoch, Anderson, Leadbetter, Pennington (c), Gray, Diop, McKinnon, Sibanda and Watson. Subs: Dobes, McInroy, Sutherland, G. Brown and Blyth.
