Opening day defeat for Hearts

Saturday 19th August 2017.

Kingdom of Fife League.

Cupar Hearts kicked off their new Kingdom of Fife League campaign with a disappointing defeat at the hands of Hearts of Beath.

Cupar started brightly and took a 2-goal advantage with only 11 minutes played but a poor start to the second half saw no way back for the home side.

Jakub Dobes opened the scoring when he blocked the ‘keepers’ clearance and had the simple task of tapping the ball into the empty net.

Then goal scorer turned provided when Dobes did all the hard work to set up Scott McKay in the middle of the box who had time to pick his spot.

Four minutes later the visitors got themselves back in the game when Kevin Goodwin ran onto a loose ball and blasted it into the net first time giving Gavin Wilson in the home sticks no chance.

Cupar missed a glorious opportunity to go further ahead on the half hour mark when Gary Brown twisted and turned but couldn’t get a shot in. Scott McKay eventually sent the ball into the mix and a stramash ensued with new boy Gordon McKinnon firing over from close range.

Right on half time Hearts frustratingly gifted the visitors the equaliser when ‘keeper Gavin Wilson dropped a high ball and Colin Paterson pounced to tap the ball over the line.

And so, it was all square going into the second period but in a crazy 2-minute spell Cupar found themselves trailing 4-2.

First Alan Falconer got himself through on goal, although with a hint of offside, to give the visitors the lead. Then Kevin Goodwin grabbed his second when he finished off a cross at the back post.

Cupar were struggling to find a reply and Aaron Leadbetter let Kevin Goodwin through on goal moments later, leaving him one on one with the ‘keeper but made up for his mistake by clearing the ball off the line.

A double substitution had an immediate effect when Gordon McKinnon and Darren Thomas made way for player- manager Lee Sibanda and the experienced Charles Anderson.

A foul by Neil Lawrie on Sibanda at the edge of the box gave Hearts a free kick opportunity with 20 minutes still to play. Jakub Dobes sent the kick goalwards but it was deflected just too high for Steven Pennington.

Just before the whistle Steven Pennington came close when he headed Kerr Brown’s cross just over the bar.

And so, it finished a very frustrating afternoon for Cupar Hearts who could not find their way back into the game.
