Star no match for Hearts.

Thursday 12th April 2012.

Kingdom Caledonian League.

Cupar Hearts picked up another 3 points when they entertained a struggling Star side. Cupar were awarded a penalty when Gary Reilly was brought down in the box after a mazy run and Barry Sibanda’s hard and low spot kick sent the ‘keeper the wrong way to open the scoring. Star Hearts were pressing forward but failed to trouble Steven McEwan in the home goal. Cupar doubled their lead on 34 minutes after a powerful shot from Iain O’Leary was parried out by Steven Clement only as far as Gary Reilly and he was on hand to knock the ball in from close range. Four minutes later a poor clearance by Steven McEwan, following a pass back from Scott McInroy, was intercepted by Stuart Kirk and his deflected shot flew high over the ‘keeper and into the net to bring Star back into the game.

Cupar Hearts totally dominated the second half and just 2 minutes after the restart a good cross by Gary Reilly was cushioned by Barry Sibanda into the path of Iain O’Leary who fired home from 12 yards. On the hour mark a deep corner by Stephen Gilfillan was eventually fired goalwards by David Simpson and Scott McInroy was in the right position to force the ball over the line. Half way through the half Cupar scored goal number five when Barry Sibanda was put through on goal but forced wide by the outcoming ‘keeper. He drove the ball to the back post where David Simpson had followed in and blasted the ball into the back of the net. Hearts concluded the scoring on 70 minutes when a high cross by Stuart Nicoll was sent in and Barry Sibanda out jumped his marker and neatly headed the ball into the net. Star Hearts rarely threatened for the remainder of the match and Cupar could easily have been in double figures.

Cupar: McEwan, Halley, McInroy, Crawford, Gilfillan, O’Leary, Boylan (c), Nicoll, G. Reilly, Sibanda, Simpson, Kane, Rintoul, Honeyman, M. Reilly and Fraser.
